The AWS Enterprise Discount Program (EDP) is a multi-year, committed-spend contract that exchanges a minimum annual consumption commitment for a tiered private discount applied across most AWS services. EDPs are not published, discount levels are negotiated, the contract is custom, and every term from commitment shortfall to service-level carve-outs is on the table. This is what we see across active engagements in 2025-2026 across mid-market through Fortune 500 buyers.

Three EDP Mechanics That Cost Buyers the Most

1. Baseline inflation. AWS's commercial team typically anchors your EDP commitment to trailing 12-month spend. If that period included a migration spike, a re:Invent-fuelled experimentation surge, or a misconfigured workload, your committed floor is artificially high. A 22% baseline reduction is the most common single line-item win we deliver, and it compounds across every year of the term.

2. Shortfall mechanics. EDPs include a "true-up" if you under-consume. The standard contract converts the shortfall into a payable charge at the full undiscounted on-demand rate, often with no carry-forward credit. We negotiate carry-forward periods (4-8 quarters), shortfall caps (typically 10-15% of commitment), and partial credit for AWS Marketplace spend.

3. Service exclusions. First-offer EDPs apply the discount across "most" services, but exclude Marketplace, AWS Activate credits, Amazon Connect, AWS Outposts, and certain Direct Connect charges. The exclusion list is the negotiation. Buyers with significant marketplace consumption (security tooling, monitoring, data products) are leaving 8-14% on the table without coverage.

Does AWS negotiate with third-party advisors?

Yes. AWS's enterprise commercial teams regularly engage with independent advisors representing their customers. We operate under a Letter of Authority from your organisation, positioning us as your commercial representative. AWS's account teams are accustomed to this arrangement and it does not affect your relationship status or support tier.

We already have an EDP, can we still reduce costs?

Yes, even mid-EDP. Options include: renegotiating the EDP commitment level if your spend trajectory has changed, implementing RI and Savings Plans coverage on top of EDP, negotiating PPAs for high-consumption services not covered by your EDP, and eliminating idle resources. Mid-EDP savings of 15-25% are achievable without waiting for renewal.
